A premier vacation destination for the adventure-seekers, high-class retreaters, and mountain-goers alike, Vail is home to activities for the indoorsy and outdoorsy among all of us. As you plan your trip, we’re here to help. Here are ten of the best things to do during your visit to Vail, Colorado.
Take a llama to lunch
Choose a full-day or half-day hike through the beautiful countryside trails of the Vail Valley without the need to carry a pack. Your llama hiking buddies will cover that part for you. Hike and lunch with gentle llamas for a mountain activity you’ll never forget.
Sail the sky in a hot air balloon
From June to September, take to the sky for this luxury twist on seeing the sights. Flights over the stunning mountain landscape offer a memorable and unique experience to see the Rockies as you’ve never seen them before.
Mush through the mountains
Climb on the dogsled and let your driver and the team of huskies lead you through two hours of wintery mountain trails, complete with warm blankets and hot cocoa.
Learn at the Colorado Snowsports Museum Hall of Fame
A free activity for the family, dive into the history of mountain sports in the exhibit-filled Vail museum and hall of fame. From the black and white to modern, learn the stories, history, fashion, and key players of Colorado snow sports.
Hop on a whitewater raft
In the ease of Vail’s own Whitewater Park or the adrenaline-filled waters of the nearby rivers, suit up and grab your paddle for a guided adventure through the mountain rapids.
Hit the slopes
This should go without saying, but perhaps the most fun to be had is on the mountains themselves. In the winter, rent tubes, skis, or boards, and sail down the runs of Vail’s stunning resort. In the summer, choose an adventure pass to brave the mountain coaster, soaring zipline, and summer tubing hill.
Wander the Minturn Market
This charming artisan market takes place in Vail Valley’s most historic town. Gourmet foods, local vendors, handmade goods, and live music bring a smalltown vibe to the vast mountain backdrop. Running from June to September, the market pops up again in December to bring Christmas to the Valley.
Hike through the hills
Take a beautiful gondola ride up Vail Mountain to access warm weather trails through the pines. Beyond Vail Mountain, the Valley is home to countless other trails for any nature or adventure trek you choose – including the stunning Booth Falls Trail.
Be a fan at the Colorado Classic
Just eight miles outside of Vail, you’ll find Avon, the heart of Eagle River Valley. For one day in August, Avon transforms to host Stage 2 of the Colorado Classic pro bicycle race. With three fan zone, a morning expo, and a post-race concert, this high energy event is a major crowd-pleaser.
