Senior Mental Health Treatment

Mental health care changes after 55, and your treatment should too.

Mental health symptoms in older adults often present differently than in younger adults. Depression may look like fatigue, irritability, loss of interest, or withdrawal. Anxiety may show up as insomnia, physical tension, or persistent fear. At All Points North, treatment planning includes the full picture: symptoms, medical history, cognitive concerns, and daily functioning.

The APN Approach for Mental Health Treatment for Older Adults

Older adults often need a more tailored treatment plan because medications, physical health conditions, grief, retirement, and changes in independence can all affect recovery. APN uses individualized, whole-person treatment planning instead of a one-size-fits-all approach.

APN begins your care with a thorough evaluation of mental health symptoms, medical history, medications, cognitive concerns, and life circumstances. This assessment helps the team recommend the right level of care and build an individualized plan based on your needs, rather than place you on a generic track.

Treatment That Fits Where You Are Right Now

APN offers a full continuum of care so people can enter treatment at the level that fits their symptoms, safety needs, and responsibilities. They can move up or down as care needs change.

Residential treatment at APN Lodge (Edwards, CO) or APN Dallas Fort Worth provides 24/7 structured care with private suites, on-site medical support, and a daily therapeutic schedule.

Partial hospitalization (PHP) runs during the day at our Lodge and DFW locations. You return home each evening.

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) meet several times per week, available in person at multiple Colorado locations, in DFW, or virtually through the APN Connection app.

Outpatient therapy and psychiatry are available individually or in groups, including virtual sessions accessible from anywhere in the country.

Every level of care uses the same clinical team and outcomes tracking. If you start in residential and step down to IOP, your providers already know your history. You don't repeat your story to a stranger.

Treatment at APN draws on therapies with strong evidence. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps identify and reshape thought patterns that fuel depression and anxiety. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) provides practical tools for managing emotional distress. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) targets trauma that may have gone unaddressed for decades. Family therapy addresses how your mental health affects the people closest to you and how their support shapes your recovery.

What makes this different from a standard outpatient therapist is the depth and coordination. Your psychiatrist, therapist, and medical team communicate daily. Medication management happens alongside therapy, not in a separate silo. If something isn't working, adjustments happen in days, not months.

When Standard Treatment Hasn't Worked: Neurotechnology Options

When depression or other symptoms have not improved enough with therapy or medication alone, your clinical team may consider additional services as part of a broader mental health treatment plan.

APN offers adjunctive neurotechnology and interventional psychiatry services through Plus by APN, including deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (deep TMS), ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) where appropriate and available. These services are used selectively and integrated with a larger treatment plan rather than positioned as stand-alone solutions.

These aren't experimental add-ons. They're delivered by licensed clinicians under medical supervision, integrated into your broader treatment plan, and tracked with the same outcome measurements we use across all programs.

APN holds the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval for Behavioral Health Care, the highest level of accreditation in the industry. During their on-site evaluation, reviewers found zero findings of harm across emergency management, environment of care, infection prevention, and medication management. APN also holds FSPHP-ETA accreditation from the Federation of State Physician Health Programs, making it one of the first treatment centers nationally to earn it.

Paying for Treatment

Insurance coverage depends on your plan and the level of care. APN accepts certain out-of-network benefits and offers insurance verification through admissions, so you can review coverage and likely out-of-pocket costs before starting treatment. Private pay may also be available.

Call 970.591.6710 to speak with an admissions coordinator. They can walk through your insurance coverage and help you understand your out-of-pocket costs before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my parent or spouse needs more than a regular therapist?

If symptoms have persisted for months despite outpatient therapy, if daily functioning has declined noticeably, or if there are safety concerns like not eating, not taking medications, or expressing hopelessness, a higher level of care is worth evaluating. APN offers free, confidential assessments to help determine the right fit.

Does APN treat dementia or Alzheimer's?

APN specializes in depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, substance use, and co-occurring disorders. We don't provide memory care or dementia-specific treatment. Many older adults receive a cognitive decline diagnosis when the actual root cause is untreated depression or anxiety. Those are conditions we treat every day.

Can family members participate in treatment?

Yes. Family therapy is part of the APN continuum at every level of care, including virtual sessions through APN Connection. Mental health conditions in older adults affect the entire family system, and treatment produces better results when family members understand what's happening and how to support recovery.

Is virtual treatment effective for older adults?

APN's virtual IOP and outpatient programs use the same clinical protocols and outcome tracking as in-person care. For older adults who can't travel or prefer the comfort of home, virtual treatment removes a real barrier without compromising quality. The APN Connection app is straightforward to use, and our team provides technical support during onboarding.
